The King’s Rallying Call

I received in my Medium Weekly Digest a post challenging writers to write a drabble (100-word story). I’ve never done one before, so this is my attempt at a drabble.

He stood before the hundreds of knights and soldiers who formed his army. Many of them sat upon horses, though many more stood waiting to hear their king speak. The winter wind blew, causing him to shiver. Still, a bead of sweat formed on his brow.

He swallowed hard.

For the Freedom of Life!

“This is not a fight against power; it is not a fight against evil alone.
It is for love that we do this.
It’s a fight about peace; it’s a fight about magic.
It’s a fight to save our friends, our lands, our world.
It’s a fight for the Freedom of Life!”

When Bahvley Fairhaven spoke these words, little did he know how he had named the war the heroes of Teloria would be fighting.

“For the Freedom of Life!” is a slogan said by many throughout Stardust Destinies, my High Fantasy YA adventure with romance novel series.

I designed T-shirts (among other things). Most recently, the Freedom of Life T-shirt. My sample has come in. Chose mine in green, though it comes in 5 different colours, one colour for each of our main characters.

You can find this T-shirt at this store. Each purchase helps support me and my ability to publish the next installment of Stardust Destinies.

I shall wear my Freedom of Life dragon proudly!

Character Interviews for Stardust Destinies

Character Interviews for the five main characters of Stardust Destinies I Variate Facing are now live. The characters being interviewed are: Niome Fairhaven, Meysah Fairhaven, Jimmesh (Jimmy) Hochka, Vigh Nimrod, and Boreth Culmik.

The premise is our heroes have but begun their journey, and are intercepted by an archivist of history who has sat down with them after they’ve set up camp for the night to ask them questions so he can record them into his book. This occurrence does not take place in the book for real, but suppose that it did, the answers in each interview are what each character would actually reply.

The questions and answers explore lore and history of the Great Ocean Valley, and the backstory of each of the five main characters, without giving away spoilers to the events taking place within the book.

Below is a preview showcasing one question from each interview.

To Niome: What is your biggest secret?

Very few people know that I am the keeper and guardian of the Compliment Book, the complimentary book to the Book of Enchantment with the final phrases to the most powerful and important spells, including the key spell to enter the Portal that lies within the dragon’s lair, from where magic is drawn into our world. Elina entrusted me to keep this book safe. She was right to keep them separate, since the Morkans stole the Book of Enchantment. Only those closest to me and those who lead our country know I possess this book, and I shall guard it with my life.

To Meysah: Who is the most important person in your life, why?

Argh, you’re asking me to choose between my sister and my best friend! No, I’m not choosing. I follow Niome, the same I’d follow Jimmy. I would take those two with me to the dark lands of the evil lord and I know they’d stand by my side. I’ll do anything for either of them, except choose between them.

To Jimmy: What are your magical spiritual views?

The Mighty Spirit created the world, magic exists within us all in some form or another, even those of us who have no magic, and the Stars guide us, the spirits of ancient magical polcs who help shape the world and inspire those who live.

To Vigh: Who is the person you despise the most, why?

If you asked me what the face of evil incarnate looked like, I’d tell you that all who have looked upon it and into the eyes of his malice have died. I don’t know what Mirauk looks like and I hope to never find out. Pure evil like him, that is what I hate, for taking away so much from so many.

To Boreth: What are your magical political views?

I would only use the Portal before my death if I live to an old age, never for power, never to return, and only because I am curious to understand the powers the dragons hold. Polcs have found ways of communicating with them through magic and have written the Dragon Prophecies. I would like to see what their realm looks like, but I will not press my luck. None have been in good standing with the dragons in a long time. I do not know how they feel about polcs or about us using their Portal that leads into their celestial realm.

A Darkness Threatens the Lands

The Mighty Spirit gave birth to her creations with the help of magic. The Stars protect and guide her creations. They are spirits of powerful and magical beings of old. The dragons live between the celestial world and the living world. They see the flux of magic and can perceive the future. They travel between the two worlds through the Portal that lies in their lair at the great mountain of Darakön.

If polcs enter that Portal, they become too powerful, and it is too tempting to control and oppress. Only those who understand magic may go through at the end of their days when they are ready to pass into the realm of the dead. For this, two books exist, and the spell that allows one to the enter the Portal is in two parts within those books.

However, a darkness threatens the lands as the evil lord of Mork, Mirauk, wishes to gain power and control over all beings by entering the Portal himself. His followers have managed to steal the Book of Enchantment, having destroyed most of Teloria, and only the Compliment Book remains safe. He will attack Teloria again. The Great Ocean Valley lies in peril and the only hope is that the Dragon Prophecies come to be reality.
