Prologue

01 Header Prologue

Several months after the defeat of Darth Kromus.

Gareth was travelling along the snowy plains of the planet Csilla in Chiss territory.  Why the young Jedi apprentice had been sent there, he couldn’t guess exactly. The Chiss were a private species and kept mostly to themselves.  Blue-skinned with red blaring eyes, their appearance made Gareth rather uneasy, so did the thought of dealing with them in person. Gareth was glad he did not need to interact much with them.
Indeed, he had been sent here for other reasons than socialising with the Chiss: a few standard weeks back, a report had been brought back to Coruscant, which spoke of fluctuating energy.  Apparently, it was causing Chiss ships to crash nearby on the planet, but they could not detect the source of the energy field. They had issued a report for a specialist from the Core. The Jedi, in hopes to forge a peaceful bond with the Chiss, offered to send a Jedi to check it out.  Gareth’s Master, a Jedi named Salah, had deemed Gareth ready to go investigate on his own, but Gareth kept his comlink close by in case he needed a long-range transmission to call for help. After all, he’d only graduated from padawan to Jedi recently. However, he could not tell why he would need help identifying energy readings.  He had a strange feeling, though, and that was why he remained alert.
His scanners began to indicate abnormal readings; each sequence of beeps picking up in speed.  He followed the signal. He came to a cave in the snow. He entered and soon realised that somehow he could sense the mass of energy through the Force.  He pocketed his datascanner and followed the signal through the Force.
He came to a curve, wind flowed through it, snow rustled into his hair.  Gareth was on top of the signal; he could feel it, though he could not see it.  He used the Force to hone in on it: below his feet. Gareth dug a bit into the snowy ground, but ice blocked the way.  He used his lightsaber to slice the rest of the way through; the blue blade glowed brightly in the dim cave. There, frozen into the ice, gleaming and teeming with Force energy, lay the source.  He used the heat from his lightsaber to melt the ice away. Then, hooking his lightsaber to his utility belt, he took what remained and held it in both hands. A pyramid in shape, it glowed purple and red.  It was a Holocron.
He could sense power emanating from it.  Yet he could not figure out who would hide such an artefact in the far reaches of space of the Unknown Regions, let alone in Chiss space of all places.  Whoever had placed this here, did not want it to be found.
Gareth knew it might be dangerous to activate the Holocron.  It did not have the typical cubical shape of a Jedi Holocron. He began to place the Holocron in his backpack when he thought it had spoken to him, not so much in words as through the Force.  He felt the need to learn about new powers. His Master was holding back on him.
No, he had to resist.  He’d heard Council members speak of a hidden Holocron, a dangerous one. Perhaps he needed to destroy it or contact Master Salah.
Better yet, activate it, learn what it had hidden and then destroy it.  Master Salah needn’t know, yes?
Gareth used the Force to activate the Holocron and he felt a surge of Force energy flow through him. He felt himself weaken and he dropped the Holocron.  He felt all the life in him being drained. He also felt his Force energy leaving him, as he struggled to resist the attack. He fell to his knees.
Then, instead of a holographic image appearing before him, was a tall man garbed in dark robes.  Gareth looked up.
‘You have done me a great service, young Jedi,’ the man said maliciously.
           ‘Who are you?’
‘I am the one who’s life was bound to that Holocron and your death will ensure the full restoration of life within me.  Without your life energy, I cannot exist.’
Gareth felt himself begin to die.  He spoke with effort.
‘You used the Force to manipulate me into activating…’
‘Yes. Turns out you are not as strong as your master thought.’
           ‘But…who…’
‘I am,’ he smiled, satisfied, ‘Darth Kromus! Dark Lord of the Sith.’
Gareth’s eyes grew wide. He knew the story of Kromus.  What had he done? He’d unleashed the most powerful Sith Lord upon the galaxy. He’d failed the Jedi Order.
Kromus lifted a hand above Gareth before darkness engulfed him forever.
