Rooftop Escapade

Isabela and Bethany express their feelings for each other,
and, after a little escapade, share their first kiss.

Isabela bent forward, squinting her eyes and craning her neck to see the broken jewel in the palm of Garrett’s hand.
‘That’s what you dragged us all the way out here for?’ she asked.
‘It’ll be worth something in Darktown,’ Garrett insisted.
Isabela exchanged a look with Bethany, who appeared to be just as bemused by her brother’s findings.
‘Eee-no,’ said Isabela. ‘You have fun trying to sell that; we’ll go after more valuable loot.’
Garrett chuckled. ‘Come on. This belonged to someone, and I bet they’re willing to pay just to have it back.’
‘You know, Garrett,’ said Bethany, ‘you’d do well not to take such advantage of people’s misery like that.’
‘I am not!’ Garrett protested. Bethany crossed her arms.
Garrett grumbled and crouched down again, rummaging through more dirt.
The sun was coming down over the horizon across the Wounded Coast. Isabela looked towards Bethany. The purple light hit her face on the side, giving her eyes an ethereal glow. She smiled.
        Bethany shifted uneasily. ‘What?’
        ‘Oh, nothing.’
‘No, not nothing. Why are you looking at me like that?’ asked Bethany.
‘Well, it’s just the light hitting your eyes,’ Isabela replied sheepishly.
‘It…it doesn’t make me look ghoulish, does it?’
‘Why would you think anything could make you look ghoulish!’ Isabela exclaimed, suppressing a laugh.
‘Anders and Varric were saying…when I cast spells, my eyes go all ghoulish.’
‘Oh, you sweet thing, they were just teasing you.’ Isabela playfully nudged Bethany. ‘You have lovely eyes.’
‘You…you really think so?’ Bethany blushed.
        ‘Of course!’
‘And what does the light do to them then?’
‘It makes your eyes glow and you look like a mage who’s come from the world of dreams,’ said Isabela, trying to sound poetic.
‘From the Fade!’ Bethany’s eyes widened in curiosity.
Isabela hesitated. ‘I mean, from my dreams.’
‘You’ve dreamt of mages with glowing eyes?’ asked Bethany, sounding hesitant, and glancing away.
Isabela smiled, feeling herself blush. ‘You’re going to make me express it clearly, aren’t you.’
‘I don’t know what you’re on about?’ Bethany’s eyes darted away before meeting Isabela’s again.
‘What I’m trying to say, is, I guess, you’re the mage–’
        ‘AHA!’ Garrett shouted. ‘Found it!’
        Isabela deflated. ‘Found what?’
‘The other half of the jewel.’ Garrett looked like a child in a candy shop.
‘Hurray,’ Isabela said, her voice full of sarcasm.
‘It’s still not impressive,’ said Bethany, ‘and I doubt you’ll be able to sell it.’
Garrett waved a hand dismissively, taking several steps away from them to examine the two halves in the setting sunlight.
‘Bethany,’ said Isabela, ‘you have lovely eyes, and I find you very beautiful.’
‘Oh!’ Bethany’s cheeks darkened. She shifted shyly.
‘There, I said it.’ Isabela turned her boot in the sand, unable to meet Bethany’s eyes.
‘You find me pretty?’ asked Bethany.
‘Yes,’ Isabela replied. ‘I mean, I find a lot of people pretty, but none of them garner a feeling of…wanting to spend more time with them.’
‘But you’ve spent so much time with so many people,’ said Bethany.
‘Spending the night with a concubine you’ve been lusting over is not the same as spending time with someone you care about,’ Isabela admitted. She looked up and met Bethany’s gaze. The mage’s smile sent a warm sensation through Isabela’s body.
‘You care about me?’ asked Bethany. Her eyes seemed to sparkle.
        ‘Yes.’ Isabela kept her gaze.
Bethany smiled even more widely. ‘I care about you too.’ She blushed. ‘And I find you very beautiful too.’
‘Oh good! I mean, about the caring.’ Isabela let out an embarrassed laugh. ‘What I mean to say is, I was worried you maybe didn’t feel the same way. Well, I suspected, but until I knew for sure… And gosh, I’m normally not this nervous.’ The two women let out a small giggle.
Bethany glanced at the ground. ‘I was hoping you’d feel that way, but since I’ve never even talked about such feelings before, I didn’t know how I might tell you. Thank you for saying it first.’
Bethany looked down again before reaching out with her hand. Isabela smiled, taking Bethany’s hand in hers. It was warm and smooth, and Isabela gently brushed her thumb over Bethany’s palm.
‘Ah, excellent!’ said Garrett, arriving with a pile of oddments. He took Isabela and Bethany’s hands, pulling them out, and placed a number of items in their open palms. ‘Both hands,’ he instructed, ‘so your four hands.’
Isabela rolled her eyes, glaring at Garrett. He bent, turning around, grabbing more of what he’d brought from the beach.
        Bethany’s eyes wandered awkwardly.
Isabela leaned in towards her conspiratorially and whispered. ‘You want to drop this hoard and run away? I bet he wouldn’t even notice we were gone.’
        Bethany gasped. ‘We couldn’t.’
        ‘We could!’
Bethany reflexively bit her thumbnail; some of the items dropped to the ground. She gasped in surprise. Isabela giggled.
‘I’ve never done anything like that before,’ Bethany said, fidgeting. ‘It seems so…uncouth.’
Isabela looked over at Garrett, who was humming to himself, digging about the area, exclaiming every now and then. She looked back at Bethany and cocked her head towards Garrett.
‘What do you say? Run away with me?’ She let out a small laugh.
Bethany sucked in her lips, suppressing a smile. ‘Okay,’ she whispered.
Isabela bit her lower lip, feeling a thrill. ‘Now.’
They dropped the hoard, and still holding hands, began to run back towards the city. They were already too far when they heard Garrett calling out to them.

* * *

Bethany collapsed against the wall of a house, panting out of breath and laughing uncontrollably. Isabela looked equally out of breath and was laughing hysterically, clutching her stomach.
‘Now that…that was too funny,’ said Isabela.
‘I can’t believe we just left him there,’ said Bethany, bringing her hands to her face. ‘I hope he doesn’t hate me.’
‘Oh, you sweet, innocent thing,’ said Isabela, ‘of course he won’t hate you. He’s your brother; he adores you.’ Isabela placed a hand on Bethany’s cheek. Bethany’s heart began to race. Isabela leaned in, touching her forehead to Bethany’s. Bethany’s gaze fell to Isabela’s lips.
‘Would you like me to kiss you?’ asked Isabela.
‘I’ve never kissed anyone before,’ Bethany admitted, ‘I’m not sure I’d be any good at it.’
‘That doesn’t matter to me,’ said Isabella. ‘But I understand if you’d rather wait.’ Isabela smiled warmly, gently passing her hand on Bethany’s cheek.
‘I think I’d like you to show me how it’s done,’ said Bethany.
Isabela’s smile widened. ‘Well, a gentle kiss is merely lips to lips, where you pucker up a bit, like this,’ Isabela leaned in some more, her lips only mildly puckered, ‘and you gently press on each other’s lips. Like this.’
Isabela’s lips brushed Bethany’s before she pressed them gently. Bethany closed her eyes, breathing in the Rivaini’s flowery perfume. Isabela moved her lips away from hers, letting out a sweet breath.
Bethany leaned in towards her. ‘Like this?’ She gently pressed her lips to Isabela’s, taking her hand in hers. When she took a step back, she felt her cheeks flush hot.
‘Just like that,’ Isabela confirmed. ‘And sometimes, it can be a little more… open-mouthed, I supposed.’ She shrugged as though pondering something.
‘You kiss with your mouth open?’
Isabela laughed. ‘Not quite. I’m afraid I’m not the best at explaining. Perhaps I can demonstrate instead.’
Bethany nodded. Isabela’s lips parted a little as she brought them to Bethany’s. When her lips touched Bethany’s, they closed. Isabela withdrew her lips, only to part them again to kiss Bethany again. Bethany mimicked, parting her lips and pressing them to Isabela’s. She found herself kissing Isabela again and again, her mouth opening wider every time, until finally, Isabela drew in a deep breath, pulling Bethany close to her body, and her tongue met Bethany’s. Isabela had a savoury flavour, and Bethany pressed herself against her body. When they pulled apart, Bethany was breathless, feeling lightheaded.
        ‘That…that was… I enjoyed that,’ Bethany whispered.
        ‘Yeah?’ Isabela beamed at her.
Afar, Bethany heard her brother’s voice calling out. ‘BethanyyyyIsabelaaaaa! I will find youuu!’
‘Oh, no, he won’t,’ said Isabela, taking Bethany’s hand. ‘Come on.’
Hurrying, Isabela led Bethany to the Hanged Man’s back entrance. She veered into an alley and climbed a ladder that hugged the wall. Bethany followed, trying not to trip. Up on the roof, Isabela hurried to the other side and ducked behind the rooftop’s railing. Bethany sat down, leaning back on the wall.
Isabela peered her head over the edge. She motioned for Bethany to have a look. Bethany lifted her head slightly. Garrett was walking along the street, carrying the hoard in a large bag, dragging it on the ground.
‘I hope he doesn’t get attacked or robbed,’ said Bethany. ‘We should maybe go help him.’
‘And let him spoil all our fun?’ said Isabela.
The two women slunk back down in their hiding spot and giggled. Bethany let out a happy sigh. Closing her eyes, she leaned her head on Isabela’s shoulder.
Isabela turned her head. Placing a hand on Bethany’s chin, she lifted it to her and kissed her gently. Bethany wrapped her arms around her, returning the kiss, feeling more confident and less inhibited. She felt Isabela’s hand brush through her hair and down her back. Bethany stroked Isabela’s stomach and up her chest. She hesitated.
‘If you want to grab my breasts, I don’t mind,’ said Isabela.
‘Uh, I…’ Bethany felt herself flush, retracting her hand. Her gaze fell to Isabela’s cleavage, where her lush breasts stood out invitingly. Bethany gently placed her hands on Isabela’s breasts, unsure of what she should do.
Isabela let out a laugh. ‘You know you can do a lot more than that.’
Bethany bit her lower lip, knowing what she wanted to do. Resolved, she decided to simply do it. She squeezed Isabela’s breasts, enjoying the plush sensation, and then squeezed some more, massaging.
Isabela gasped and let out a soft moan. ‘Ooh, you sure you’ve never done this before?’
Bethany giggled, leaning her forehead on Isabela’s. She collapsed into her arms, and Isabela kissed her brow.
‘I think I enjoy kissing you,’ said Bethany.
‘I enjoy that too,’ said Iabela. ‘Kissing you, I mean.’ She paused. ‘Would you like to come to my room?’
Bethany considered. She wanted to, but not tonight. She’d had enough excitement for one night.
‘I think I’d rather stay in your arms like this for now,’ she said.
‘Then I’ll be happy to hold you.’
Bethany looked up at Isabela, who leaned in to kiss her. Bethany tasted her again, smelling Isabela’s aroma, before nestling her head on her shoulder and closing her eyes.

* * *

The sun came up bright and hot, and Isabela stirred. Bethany was startled awake.
‘Oh my! Is it morning already? The Circle will wonder where I’ve been!’
‘I’m sure it’ll be fine,’ Isabela said soothingly. She looked about, gathering her bearings.
‘Last night was wonderful,’ said Bethany.
        ‘You are wonderful,’ said Isabela.
        Bethany smiled, blushing.
‘Let’s go help your brother sort through his loot,’ said Isabela, standing up.
Bethany brought her hands to her mouth. ‘He’s going to be so mad at us.’ She giggled.
‘No, he won’t. We’ll explain what happened and he’ll be happy. Then maybe we can score ourselves some free breakfast.’
‘What about the Circle?’ asked Bethany.
‘We were hoarding loot!’ Isabela spread out her arms and shrugged.
She reached her hand to Bethany and pulled her up. Bethany came up close to Isabela, her lips nearly touching hers; she brushed a gentle kiss to Isabela’s lips. Isabela felt a tingle in her body and her stomach fluttered; she wrapped her arms around Bethany. Isabela brushed the back of her hand on Bethany’s cheek.
‘You sweet thing,’ she said. ‘You definitely are very sweet.’
        ‘So are you,’ said Bethany.
Taking Isabela’s hand, Bethany led her towards the ladder, and together they made their way to the estate.
When they arrived, Garrett had laid out all his hoard on the dining table.
‘There you are!’ Grinning proudly, he motioned lavishly at the table. ‘Behold, my findings.’
Bethany wrinkled her nose. ‘What’s that smell? Did you even clean these things?’
Garrett chuckled. ‘And where have you two been?’
Isabela felt her cheeks turn so hot she was convinced she was blushing more than Bethany.
‘We were together,’ said Bethany, beaming.
‘Ah, so it worked,’ said Garrett, turning back towards the table.
‘Hang on a minute,’ said Isabela, grabbing his arm and pulling him. ‘What do you mean, it worked?’
‘Getting you two alone enough to admit how you felt for each other,’ Garret said, shrugging.
‘But you called out after us!’ exclaimed Bethany.
Garrett came up behind them, placing an arm around each of their shoulders. ‘All a ploy. It was all a ploy.’ He clapped them a couple of times before returning to sorting his hoard.
‘And here I thought…’ Bethany began. She shook her head and stepped out of the room. She turned to Isabela, smiling. ‘Well, at least we know he’s not upset.’
‘Well, I could have told you that,’ said Isabela.
Bethany let out a playful laugh. It was high pitched and such a lovely sound to Isabela. Then Bethany wrapped her arms around her, pressing her lips to hers, and moving her hands to Isabela’s face.
‘I’m just so happy I don’t have to hide how I feel anymore. I don’t have to fear it or wonder if you feel the same way.’ Bethany kissed Isabela again. Isabela pulled Bethany closer. Their kisses deepened and Bethany nibbled Isabela’s lower lip. Bethany gasped, pulling away. ‘Oh, so that’s how that feels. I mean, the sensation inside me.’
Isabela let out a small laugh. ‘It’s delightful, isn’t it?’
Bethany merely blushed, and Isbaela took her in her arms, rocking a bit.
‘I think I smell breakfast,’ she said.
‘Yes, I’m rather hungry,’ replied Bethany.
‘Come then, we’ll have plenty of time to kiss some more afterwards.’
The two women giggled playfully, making their way to the breakfast table, where Garrett joined them, smiling fondly at them.
Bethany began recounting their little adventure to her brother, telling him about how she thought he’d be upset, and how they’d run off to the roof of the hanged man. Isabela had never seen her this animated before, and when Bethany glanced her way, her smile told more than her words had the previous night.
Isabela felt a warm sensation within her, and something else she’d never really felt before. And she just listened to Bethany speak, basking in the new feelings she was experiencing.
