Boreth Culmik Interview

Boreth stood; the young ones were discussing their interviews and reveling in being recorded in the history archives. He joined Vigh and the travelling archivist. Vigh patted Boreth’s back, returning to the fire. Boreth motioned a nearby tree stump where he and the archivist sat down.

What is your occupation?

Being a seasoned knight many look up to is a great responsibility. I’ve seen and lived things during the Big War and I’m not sure that war ever truly ended. I want to act as an example for those who look up to me. I’m glad I get to do it with my dearest of friends; Vigh is like family to me.

Do you have any physical traits that stand out?

My ancestors are Dalvaran, and Dalvarans are descended from the Kaulchèc, who were shorter polcs who came to our valley for a time. Thus I am much shorter than the average standard polc, not quite as short as a Dalvaran, but when folks see me, they recognise my ancestry.

Where did you learn most of your skills and abilities?

My master was Gorthan, who is the Chief of masters of the art of swords and bows. He is the greatest warrior in our country. I am glad for the rigorous training I got, for it kept me alive in situations where I may otherwise have died.

Did you have any role models? If so, describe them, and why were they your role model?

There are many to whom I’ve looked for guidance throughout my life so far. Henker, the Elder is one stubborn old polc with a hard head and a heart of gold. If one polc has inspired me tremendously, he is definitely that polc. His knowledge and wisdom is second to none. I hope some day I can inspire others as he has me.

What event do you consider to have had the most impact on your life?

The Big War, definitely. I was captured and brought to Morkan camps where I was tortured for many days. My wit and cunning kept me alive. I seemed valuable enough to be kept alive, but never gave away what I knew or what I did not know. It was Bahvley Fairhaven and his team who found me before my escape. I will forever be grateful for it.

Are you optimistic or pessimistic?

I like to remain vigilant and cautious. I tend to doubt circumstances, am rather suspicious, and I don’t believe in luck too much. Does that make me pessimistic? I believe it makes me a seasoned warrior.

What is your greatest fear?

I fear the world ending; I fear Mirauk succeeding. He must not. Whatever our new mission entails, we must succeed. Mirauk must not go through the Portal to dominate all the people of all the lands. It must not come to be.

What are your magical spiritual views?

Most believe the Mighty Spirit created the world, that magic co-exists with her, and the Stars guide us all, as the spirits of ancient magical folks who visited our world confirm they are these Stars. However, I’m not certain what exactly created our world, or how it came to be. Was it magic? The Mighty Spirit? Perhaps the Mighty Spirit and magic are one, and that it is neither mother nor father, but both and neither all at once. I’m simply grateful to exist and hope to help restore peace in the lands so that the war for the power of the Portal may end.

What are your magical political views?

I would only use the Portal before my death if I live to an old age, never for power, never to return, and only because I am curious to understand the powers the dragons hold. Polcs have found ways of communicating with them through magic and have written the Dragon Prophecies. I would like to see what their realm looks like, but I will not press my luck. None have been in good standing with the dragons in a long time. I do not know how they feel about polcs or about us using their Portal that leads into their celestial realm.

Do you believe in the existence of a soul mate/true love?

I believe that some day I will find a polc with whom I will share a love so pure, I will know. I’ll just know right away.

Are you able to kill? Under what circumstances do you find killing acceptable?

I have killed, yes. I don’t enjoy it and I wish at times my talents lay elsewhere, but alas, I am a knight and archer, and I will fight to protect those I care about.

Who or what would you die for, or otherwise go to extremes for?

I would die for love, to protect those I love, but I will, as sure as the stars will shine, ensure I stay alive, for if I’m dead, who will fight for them and with them?

How close are you to your family?

My family means everything to me. It pangs me that I moved to Teloria City, the north-most city of our country, while they’re all still in the south-most parts of Teloria. I’m very close to my mother; my father died during the Big War. I don’t have siblings, perhaps that is why Vigh and I are like brothers, but I am close to many cousins. There are a number I’ve not seen in a while or don’t know, many have moved to other parts of the country, some died during the Big War too, but I visit my mother and several family members as often as I can.

Who is the most important person in your life, why?

Vigh. We’ve been close friends for as long as I can remember; he’s practically family at this point. Plus, we’re partner-knights, which is a special title that comes with special training, and I wouldn’t have accepted the title for any other knight. There is no other with whom I would go to the depths of the world.

Who is the person you respect the most?

Selemil is one of the prime advisors who oversees our country, and a wise polc powerful in magic. He always puts our country first and his skills are admirable. He knows things, keeps secrets, and has developed many new forms of magic based on the magic shared by allies. That’s something few can do.

Have you ever been in love?

Ah, to be in love. I’m a romantic. I believe I will know right away when I find the polc who will steal my heart. I look forward to it.

If you died or went missing, who would miss you?

I already went missing once. Vigh searched for me and found me shortly after Bahvley had rescued me from a Morkan encampment. I had friction marks where I’d been bound, I was battered from being interrogated and tortured. Vigh helped me get back home. I sure am glad to have him as a friend. If I went missing again, he’d be there searching and finding, and if I died, well, at least he’d have the others to look after him.

Who is the person you despise the most, why?

Despise, hate, loathe. There was a time when I had hoped I would never bear such emotions. Even when the Big War began, I told myself the polc behind the war was deluded. After my captivity and the tortures I suffered, for so many polcs to believe so adamantly in their lord’s vision, to follow their king without question, only the most evil could convince so many. His evil has transferred to them. Through them, his evil spreads. Thus, I hate Mirauk.

What is your greatest strength? Your greatest weakness?

I’m an excellent tracker and I have far-seeing eyes. This enhances my skills. However, I know I can be distracted by negative emotions that may cloud my judgement.

What is the one thing for which you would most like to be remembered after your death?

For surviving the Big War and this war that we are now in. For fighting for my country. Whatever else I accomplish I’ll add to this list in due course.

The travelling archivist wrote his last notes and put his ink, quill and book back in his bag. He and Boreth walked back to the fire, rejoining the others. The archivist thanked them, bowing politely, before turning and disappearing into the night.
