Jimmy Hochka Interview

Jimmy shivered from the cool soft wind. He got closer to the fire, as the travelling archivist turned towards him, dipping his quill in the ink jar.

What is your occupation?

I’ve always wanted to be a knight. I don’t need an official title to learn a skill I’m passionate about. I’ll become the greatest knight there ever was, just by going out there and fighting the enemy. Just you see!

Where did you learn most of your skills and abilities?

Everything I’m learning is with the help of my friends and their masters. I don’t have my own master yet, but I learnt a lot in my sword fighting classes. I practice all the time. I don’t learn as fast as most others, but that’s not going to stop me. Even Gorthan, the Chief of all knights, taught me some tricks. Besides, they don’t teach courage, and I’m not backing down from facing the enemy.

Did you have any role models? If so, describe them, and why were they your role model?

I want to be just like Gorthan the Chief. He’s the master of masters, of all the knights. He decides who gets the title of knight. He’s so skilled; he’s a mighty fighter. I’m going to be just like him.

What event do you consider to have had the most impact on your life?

When the Big War hit and the Morkans attacked Teloria, that’s when I knew without a doubt I wanted to be a hero, become like so many brave knights, and fight to protect Teloria. The war changed me in that way.

Are you optimistic or pessimistic?

I tend to be hopeful. I tend to doubt other people when they give me reason to doubt them, but I know we’ll succeed.

What is your greatest fear?

My greatest fear is dying and never being able to prove my worth as a knight and become what I’ve always aspired to be.

What are your magical spiritual views?

The Mighty Spirit created the world, magic exists within us all in some form or another, even those of us who have no magic, and the Stars guide us, the spirits of ancient magical polcs who help shape the world and inspire those who live.

What are your magical political views?

The Portal’s power is sacred and there is so much about it I still don’t understand. I know what polcs have used it for in the past, for enlightenment before death; and I know what Mirauk wants it for, to gain power to control the rest of us. This Portal caused two brothers long ago to hate each other; one was banished and the other self-exiled. Should we then close the Portal, or maybe we just let the dragons decide. I mean, it’s their Portal, after all.

Do you believe in the existence of a soul mate/true love?

Of course! Who that is, I’m not sure. I’m not focused on that right now, but I can’t wait to fall in love!

Are you able to kill? Under what circumstances do you find killing acceptable?

I hope I stay alive and live through my first fight. You see, I’ve never killed before. I hope it gets easier. I wish the enemy wasn’t trying to kill us though, then I wouldn’t have to kill at all. I hope I can stand my ground as a learning knight.

Who or what would you die for, or otherwise go to extremes for?

I’m not sure that I would want to die. It’s my greatest fear, so I’d just stay alive for what I fight for, so I can keep fighting for it, and I’ll follow my friends and help save Teloria. That’s what I’ll do!

Who is the most important person in your life, why?

Meysah. He’s my best friend; we’ve known each other since forever. He’s like a brother to me. I don’t have siblings, but it feels like through magic, Meysah is my brother. Just because we’re not linked through blood relation doesn’t mean we can’t be brothers. He’s my best friend!

Who is the person you respect the most?

Henker the Elder is the oldest polc in Teloria and he always has some wise quip or rhyme to say. He sees beyond what most understand. It’s beyond me, that’s for sure. He’s always so cheery, even in times of war. He sees the future, he knows a lot. I just wish he shared his secrets more often. I could use with knowing a bit of my future.

Have you ever been in love?

Good question. I haven’t really thought about it. There are a few polcs I find cute, but I’ll wait a bit. I’m in no rush.

If you died or went missing, who would miss you?

Oh, don’t talk to me about that! Dying is my biggest fear! So let’s do, if I went missing. I know Meysah would miss me, so would my parents, and I guess my new team of friends would too.

Who is the person you despise the most, why?

I suppose I despise whom I fear the most and that would be Mirauk. The polc can look into your eyes and curse you with illness and death. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t hate him.

What is your greatest strength? Your greatest weakness?

I am determined and willing to follow friends and go fight the enemy if we have to. Except that my skills are still lacking a bit; I’m a slow learner, you see. Hopefully I can compensate for that somehow.

What is the one thing for which you would most like to be remembered after your death?

I’ve said I’d like to be the Chief of Masters and knights. So for being exactly that.
