Niome Fairhaven Interview

Niome sat down on her makeshift cot, close to the fire, warming her hands. She looked over to the travelling archivist who held ink jar and quill, with his book on his lap, eager to know Niome’s thoughts, and smiled. The archivist began the interview.

What is your occupation?

I am a wizardess of Teloria. It is my responsibility to secure and learn all the magical items in the country. My master was the Great Wizardess. I am now the one with the most knowledge and understanding of magic in all its forms. I am looked to to use my wisdom in magical decisions. It is a great responsibility that has been bestowed upon me while I am still quite young, but I am confident I can live up to my late master’s title and make her proud.

Where did you learn most of your skills and abilities?

I learnt from my master, Elina. She was the Great Wizardess of Teloria. I was born with natural magical proficiencies, and Elina taught me how to channel my magic, cast spells, understand ancient texts and interpret the prophecies.

Did you have any role models? If so, describe them, and why were they your role model?

My role model was my master. She always seemed poised and adept magically. She was cursed by Mirauk, and yet she found a way to survive longer. She carried the weight of long years as a wielder of magic, yet cared for others and never put herself first. I admired her and I will always miss her.

How do/did you get along with other siblings?

It’s great being the child in the middle; I get to have an older brother I can look up to, and a younger brother for whom I can be an example. Except now I only have Meysah left. I wouldn’t ask him to drop everything for me or my mission, but I’m glad he’s here with me.

What event do you consider to have had the most impact on your life?

Honestly, it was recently when Elina died and told me her secret phrase in her dying breath. I now know it is my time to be out here and to fight for Teloria. It ignited within me the strength and will to be the wizardess I am meant to be.

What is your biggest secret?

Very few people know that I am the keeper and guardian of the Compliment Book, the complimentary book to the Book of Enchantment with the final phrases to the most powerful and important spells, including the key spell to enter the Portal that lies within the dragon’s lair, from where magic is drawn into our world. Elina entrusted me to keep this book safe. She was right to keep them separate, since the Morkans stole the Book of Enchantment. Only those closest to me and those who lead our country know I possess this book, and I shall guard it with my life.

Are you optimistic or pessimistic?

I’m not sure which I am more. I used to be more optimistic, but now that so much rests on my shoulders, I carry the doubt that comes with such responsibility.

What is your greatest fear?

Failing. So much rests on my shoulders now, I don’t even know what my true destiny is. I must succeed; it is the only option.

What are your magical spiritual views?

I believe that the Mighty Spirit created the world and all the peoples in it, and that she gave birth to all her creations. It is up to us to look after her world with the magic we have.

What are your magical political views?

I want to understand better the role of the dragons in our world. The Portal that leads to their celestial realm is where magic pours into ours. Mirauk wants to use the Portal to gain ultimate power on all the lands and dominate over us. There is a reason why only when one is close to death they may enter, and they must not return. The power the Portal provides is so immense, how can one enter and return, and then not be tempted to use their power for evil. Sole the dragons remain neutral, so it seems.

Do you believe in the existence of a soul mate/true love?

I’ve cared deeply for others, for friends, a bond so deep I loved them, but it was more of a caring between friends. I’d like to find the kind of love that fills me with happiness, but I want someone who can keep me grounded while I can do the same for him.

Are you able to kill? Under what circumstances do you find killing acceptable?

I was too young to fight during the Big War and untrained in magic. I escaped and hid and sent basic spells, but I have not yet killed an enemy. I am ready however to do what I must. If I must fight, if I am attacked, I will know how to fight them.

Who or what would you die for, or otherwise go to extremes for?

I will fight to save Teloria and to stop the enemy. I must survive in order to succeed, but I will not back out now. I know what I must do.

How close are you to your family?

Meysah and I are very close. Some siblings don’t get along, but we were always close. Bahvley and I were a little less close. He was older, said he knew best, but I have magic. We’d argue, but then we’d always find a way to compromise. These are dark times, but with Meysah around, I feel I can really be myself; it’s comforting.

Who is the most important person in your life, why?

Meysah. He’s my brother, the only brother I have left. I want to keep him safe and I’d do anything to make sure he is, anything within reason, of course.

Who is the person you respect the most?

It is Elina, my master, before she passed away from the illness caused by Mirauk’s evil gaze. I still and always will respect her. She taught me so much. She was the Great Wizardess of Teloria and she chose me to be her apprentice. Perhaps that was indeed written in the stars.

Have you ever been in love?

Ah, I don’t know if it was love; I think I was still too young to understand it, but there was a young knight, Tharguen, a friend of Bahvley’s, my lost brother. He always made me laugh. At the time, we were still too young but he was so charming. During the Big War, he kept me safe. We snuck into an alley and hid from the Morkans within the rubble of an old abandoned house. He left with Bahvley and was reportedly killed. I don’t know if I’ll ever feel the same about anyone.

If you died or went missing, who would miss you?

Meysah certainly would, he’s my brother! My parents. And my new team of loyal friends. We all have each other, and right now, all we’ve got is each other.

Who is the person you despise the most, why?

Mirauk. He killed my master with his curse, reportedly killed my older brother. He’s waging war on our country because he wants the power the Portal wields. He is the most dangerous polc to exist.

What is your greatest strength? Your greatest weakness?

I have great magical abilities and understanding. Many of my powers are only developing now, but the magic I already possess and skills I’ve practiced for years allow me to become a master of these new powers and abilities. However, I am hard-headed, I must admit, and sometimes a bit…not quite impulsive, but I’ll do what I believe is best, sometimes without thinking it through enough. But I’m out here now, so perhaps it’s a good thing.

What is the one thing for which you would most like to be remembered after your death?

I don’t know what my true destiny is yet, but if I end up being the one to defeat Mirauk, I’d like to be known as the one who defied evil incarnate.
