This week on Binky’s Blog, Binky shares an experience involving filming at night and what they did to better a scene without any professional lighting equipment, as well as give some advice on how to avoid mishaps in these circumstances.
“Last weekend, we drove down to the country side in Ontario, on the border of Quebec, to film some scenes that needed to look somewhat medieval (for a fundraiser/trailer and for the geek programmer web series Compiling.tv). We had no problem for our day scenes, not even any shadow off-setting the sun to worry about. It was cloudy, so the light was consistent everywhere, at all times. All that was needed to do was lower the exposure on the camera. However, there was a scene at night, and (given that it was for the fundraiser, so we had no funds yet to pay for the appropriate LED spotlights that are good to light up a scene at night) it required some problem solving.”

This week on Binky’s Blog, Binky explains the importance of Business Cards while giving advice on deciding a design for those who don’t yet have business cards and are in need of inspiration.
“People are always saying that first impressions matter. And it’s true. But a first impression is not just walking into the audition room or interview, it’s not just the hand shake or CV and head shot, part of first impressions are business cards. I just printed a new batch of business cards this week and feel compelled to share what I know of their importance, and how one might want to design them, to anyone without a business card. Like I’ve said in the past, I’m not a graphic artist, I had these done by someone I know, but being an artist, I can help you get inspired. Because let’s face it, what are you going to put on it, what colours are you going to use, what font. It’s all important because this is what people will look at and it has to convey who you are, what you do and make them want to contact you. It’s how they’ll remember that conversation that occurred on the street when they met you.”

This week on Binky’s Blog, Binky shares her discoveries in creating e-books covers without spending more a few bucks at most, and adjusting image colour without being a graphic designer.
“I just spent the past 5 hours (11 PM to 4 AM) trying to figure out how to create an e-book cover and adjust colour on an image. Okay, some of you might be going “duah”. Thing is, I’m not a graphic artist and I don’t draw. Illustrator and Photoshop are alien to me. Needless to say the image wouldn’t open in Photoshop. And now you’re wondering, from someone who makes videos, WHY am I trying to create an e-book cover. Simple, so I can sell my own e-books on my website. I did mention I had a series of short stories I wanted to self-publish. What I found was that I can do all this with Powerpoint and Adobe ImageReady. Let me share with you what I discovered.”

This week on Binky’s Blog, Binky talks about the importance of, and a good way to develop the sill, colour-correction.
“That’s right. When you enter the world of colour-correction and RGB, balancing light and colour in an image, the rules of colour we thought we knew don’t apply. Needless to say, although time consuming and at times confusing, it is a necessary part of video post-production. It allows one’s video to be, well, balanced out.
When you’re on set, you can have all the necessary lighting equipment, do all your white balances properly, yet when you’ve edited your video, the light and colour changes from shot to shot. This is normal. We cannot fully control light and colour on set. In a perfect world, it would be automatic and there would be no need for this task. Which is why people like Binky Productions and other companies offer this service. It’s okay if you don’t have the patience for it, and if you do, and you want to understand more or learn it altogether, then you’ve come to the right blog.”
