The Red Herring – Fiction Short Story — Detective — Mystery — Romance

Peter watched the interrogation from the other side of the glass window, musing over what their prime suspect was divulging while he waited for forensics to return with any fingerprints. He absently passed his thumb and index over his moustache.

Their suspect, a lean woman with a sultry voice whose long wavy hair fell below her breasts, sat with an arm draped over the back of the interrogation chair, jutting her chest out to expose her cleavage, as though she were giving a celebrity interview. God only knew she thought of herself as one. Her lavish crimson dress was cut at just the right angles and the way she moved only made the heat rise to Peter’s face.

Peter’s colleague, Michael, concluded the interrogation and entered the room Peter was watching from. Peter cleared his throat. Michael looked completely unphased.

‘Certainly lives up to her name, doesn’t she?’ Peter remarked. ‘What, with that dress.’

Michael shrugged. ‘Unlike you, I wasn’t paying attention to what she was wearing, I was busy asking her the right questions.’

‘We need to piece the timeline,’ Peter prompted, quickly changing the subject.

‘Dinner party with concert afterwards, except our victim never makes it to the concert after retreating to change, the other guests arrive late, while the smoke alarm in the manor goes off before our victim is found by the maid.’

‘Did you speak to her? The maid?’

Michael rolled his eyes. ‘Sadly, yes. She’s insufferable. Complaints left and right, droning on about nothing ever left in its place once touched by anyone, and her laugh, ugh, I think she’s a witch.’

‘A witch? Really?’ Peter chuckled.

‘Have you heard her laugh?’ Michael’s eyes widened. ‘She cackles!’ He shook his head. The overhead light cast a soft glow on his five o’clock shadow — it had been a long day, and it was far from over.

Peter chuckled again. He looked over at their suspect who turned to sit facing the glass –the mirror from her side– and puckered her lips seductively.

Peter cleared his throat. ‘I swear, she knows we’re watching her.’

Michael placed a hand on Peter’s shoulder. ‘If she’s cleared, are you going to take her home?’

Peter grinned, feeling his cheeks flush.

And Nothing Else Mattered! A Most Cherished Memory Anecdote

I was staying over at a friend’s house where she lived with her boyfriend, John, who had become a good friend of mine through her. At the time, I was dating a mutual friend of theirs. The three of them convinced me, as in twisted my arm, to watch The Ring.

I’m not into horror movies.

In fact, I have some bad experiences with horror and gory stuff.

But they said I’d be safe; we’d smoke some joints, all would be well.

“All right, but if I scream, that’s on you.’

So we installed ourselves to watch, and I was huddled to my date — who was laughing about my anticipated fear, by the way — all tense the whole way through.

The Book of Enchantment – Epic Fantasy Fiction Lore for Stardust Destinies

The Book of Enchantment is the first of two spell books containing important and powerful spells. It has the main parts or first halves of spells, while its counterpart, the Compliment Book, contains the other half or the commanding final phrase of the spells.

The books were created from one original book in order to protect the Portal Key Spell from the Morkans who wished to gain access to the Portal and be the most powerful.

Entering the Portal was reserved for those knowledgeable and powerful enough in magic who were ready to pass on to become stars at the end of their life.

Sanguine Sincerity – Romance Action Short Story

The silence was both terrifying and soothing at the same time. Liam closed his eyes and leaned against the brick wall as he stood outside the club. He had the closing shift again. It had been busy, with people dancing, shouting, laughing, all drunkenly. Now, the stillness of the winter night dampened whatever sounds came from the boulevard a few streets down.

This was where he had often stood with Julian after their work shifts, talking, laughing, kissing, and making plans for their future together. But Julian was gone, left one night before dawn, without a word, without an explanation. Only a scribble on a post-it saying, “I have to leave. I’m sorry.”

It hurt, it still did, even after all these weeks. And Julian had never called or answered Liam’s calls after that night. Liam didn’t understand why he’d left. He thought they’d been happy.

He had once relished in the quiet after the bustle of work, now he missed hearing Julian’s voice or seeing his smile. His heart broke every day again and again. Yet he continued to stand here in the spot where they had shared their first kiss, where he had told Julian he was in love with him.

After months together he had known he loved him and he’d told him. Julian had immediately reciprocated but then left a few days later. Liam couldn’t help but wonder if things had moved too fast between them.

Taking a deep breath, he ensured the club was well locked and began down the dark alley. He didn’t want to linger too long. There had been murders in the neighbourhood, all gunshot wounds. The rival gangs were at it again. It hadn’t stopped the clubgoers, though. Liam figured it was only a matter of time before both gangs decided they wanted to own the club and took their fight to the neighbouring streets.

Liam heard the screech of tires and shouting not too far. He paused, waiting to make sure it was just some drunk folks, but he tensed when he heard a gunshot thunder the stillness.

Looks like the gang fight’s here now, he thought to himself.

He quickened his pace and veered the corner into the next alley and came face to face with the man who had left him.

‘Julian!’ Liam breathed. He swallowed hard, his heart suddenly drumming in his chest.

‘Liam.’ Julian hesitated.

Liam was flooded by a wave of emotions. ‘What the hell, Julian?’ he shouted, tears stinging his eyes.
