Counting Time & Polken Talk – Appendix 4 & 5 — Epic Fantasy Lore for Stardust Destinies

Counting Time

The Telorians, along with all polcs, have a different way of counting the days than we do. The polc New Year’s Day falls on the shortest day of the year. The longest day of the year is called Half Year’s Day. In between each, when night and day are of equal length, is the Warm Quarter Day and the Cool Quarter Day. The polcs count 365 days each year, like we do, and every fourth year, there is an extra day before Warm Quarter Day (our Spring Equinox). They count four seasons: Spring, Summer, Colouring, and Winter. Spring starts on Warm Quarter Day, Summer on Half Year’s Day, and so forth.

Polcs don’t have months like we do. They have the notion of weeks, though. This may become confusing when keeping track of their birthdays, but if you’re used to counting with the sun, it becomes second nature. Someone’s birthday would be on the oomph day of the umph week of the season, or the oomph of the year. They knew that Warm Quarter Day fell on the 90th day of the year, Half Year’s Day on the 183rd, Cool Quarter Day on the 276th, and New Year’s Day on the first.

The Portal – Where the Dragons Dwell — Epic Fantasy Lore for Stardust Destinies

The Portal lies deep within the Dragon’s Lair in the heart of the mountain Darakön. It is the portal into and from the celestial realm from where the dragons come and a source of great magic.

A Piece From Kaulchèc History

Before recorded history, the Kaulchèc came to the Great Ocean Valley and taught polcs how to utilise their magic in more powerful and practical ways. These Kaulchèc also discovered that if one enters the Portal, one can understand and master magic more powerfully. Upon reemerging from the Portal, one will be more powerful than any other.

To mitigate greed for power, Teloria’s rulers declared that one could only go through the Portal near the end of their life if they were already powerful enough in magic. In this way, that polc would die and become a star and not reemerge. Thus, the people of Teloria came to an agreement with the dragons who guarded the Portal.

However, greed for power overcame Bortah Mittèlor during King Silovah Firlan Mittèlor’s rule, and the king banished his brother and other members of his family from Teloria, in 2260 of Kaulchèc History. Eventually, fearing that greed would overcome him as well, Silovah Firlan left in exile, with many following him, and formed the small kingdom of Firlan Forest.

Over time, Bortah Mittèlor and his followers and new allies from the western islands, founded Morok, now known as Mork, with the goal to one day gain access to the Portal.

Character Interviews for Stardust Destinies

Character Interviews for the five main characters of Stardust Destinies I Variate Facing are now live. The characters being interviewed are: Niome Fairhaven, Meysah Fairhaven, Jimmesh (Jimmy) Hochka, Vigh Nimrod, and Boreth Culmik.

The premise is our heroes have but begun their journey, and are intercepted by an archivist of history who has sat down with them after they’ve set up camp for the night to ask them questions so he can record them into his book. This occurrence does not take place in the book for real, but suppose that it did, the answers in each interview are what each character would actually reply.

The questions and answers explore lore and history of the Great Ocean Valley, and the backstory of each of the five main characters, without giving away spoilers to the events taking place within the book.

Below is a preview showcasing one question from each interview.

To Niome: What is your biggest secret?

Very few people know that I am the keeper and guardian of the Compliment Book, the complimentary book to the Book of Enchantment with the final phrases to the most powerful and important spells, including the key spell to enter the Portal that lies within the dragon’s lair, from where magic is drawn into our world. Elina entrusted me to keep this book safe. She was right to keep them separate, since the Morkans stole the Book of Enchantment. Only those closest to me and those who lead our country know I possess this book, and I shall guard it with my life.

To Meysah: Who is the most important person in your life, why?

Argh, you’re asking me to choose between my sister and my best friend! No, I’m not choosing. I follow Niome, the same I’d follow Jimmy. I would take those two with me to the dark lands of the evil lord and I know they’d stand by my side. I’ll do anything for either of them, except choose between them.

To Jimmy: What are your magical spiritual views?

The Mighty Spirit created the world, magic exists within us all in some form or another, even those of us who have no magic, and the Stars guide us, the spirits of ancient magical polcs who help shape the world and inspire those who live.

To Vigh: Who is the person you despise the most, why?

If you asked me what the face of evil incarnate looked like, I’d tell you that all who have looked upon it and into the eyes of his malice have died. I don’t know what Mirauk looks like and I hope to never find out. Pure evil like him, that is what I hate, for taking away so much from so many.

To Boreth: What are your magical political views?

I would only use the Portal before my death if I live to an old age, never for power, never to return, and only because I am curious to understand the powers the dragons hold. Polcs have found ways of communicating with them through magic and have written the Dragon Prophecies. I would like to see what their realm looks like, but I will not press my luck. None have been in good standing with the dragons in a long time. I do not know how they feel about polcs or about us using their Portal that leads into their celestial realm.
