Le Cercueil — The Coffin – Un poème — A Poem

I forget when I wrote this one, but I am mildly surprised at how lovely it’s written and how it flows.

My character who is the subject of the poem, is a young woman, and a fictional character I wrote about.

I am first including the original French version, as I wrote it. Below I will have the English translation. Hopefully my translation can do my French words justice.

Warnings: Suicide subject matter.

The Coffin (English Translation)

There she is finally.
She is sorrowful,
an expression of deception upon her face.
All she ever desired,
was some peace and freedom,
but she did not find these.
She is still and forever alone,
in this room,
with the scent of maquillage
and three nuns.

Writing Iambic to Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” – When Writing Fan-Fiction or Poetry

When I was in the Professional Theatre Program, as part of our curriculum we studied Shakespeare. We performed scenes in class, learnt all about the Iambic Pentameter, and even performed on stage. My year performed “As You Like It”.

We studied iambic inside and out so that we could not only interpret our lines well to deliver a good performance, but so that we could also improvise in iambic if ever anything unexpected happened while performing or we missed our cue or forgot a line. And all those did indeed happen.

What Is Iambic Pentameter?

Wikipedia defines it as:

“a type of metric line used in traditional English poetry and verse drama. The term describes the rhythm, or meter, established by the words in that line; rhythm is measured in small groups of syllables called “feet”. “Iambic” refers to the type of foot used, here the iamb, which in English indicates an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable (as in a-bove).”

Basically: unstressed-stressed-unstressed-stressed in an down-up-down-up way.

We would exaggerate lines this way to find the deeper meaning of how Shakespeare intended his words to be performed. A classic example is the “To Be” soliloquy.

To be, or not to be, that is the question:

So one would then emphasise “is” in the second part.

So that’s iambic.

What does it have to do with Leonard Cohen, Fan-Fiction or Poetry?

Hell — Musings from the Past – A Poem Contemplating Heaven and Hell

This is my first poem for The Black Veil and I am thrilled to join the publication.

Today’s poem comes courtesy from the past, from a notebook wherein I wrote some poems during my later teen years.

So without further ado…

HELL

It’s not a place where you go when you die,
nor a place you go because you were “bad”.
Hell is your existence on Earth,
depending what you’re living through;
what happened in your past,
and who you are surrounded by.

Of course, it’s quite possible,
to have Heaven on Earth.
The complicated thing is,
you can have Hell in Heaven,
you can have Heaven in Hell.

Emerald Paths To Inspiration – A Poem from an Elven Spirit

There will be those who will attempt
to use their voice to quiet yours,
with rage they’ll bring you down to their vibration.

I know you have transcended all
the base emotions you possessed,
transformed to joy is all your hate and anger.

Do not let them
taint enjoyment
of the things that
bring your life purpose.

Long has it been since you unlocked
the gate that opens up your life
and leads through emerald paths to inspiration.
