Fired For Asserting My Rights – An Anecdoe about the First Time I Got Fired from a Job

The assistant manager spun the story to get me fired, the biznatch!

I was working at a patisserie, a chocolate and pastry shop, I had just been hired, and it was during the time I was with the man who abused me. I thought my confidence wasn’t the best, but apparently, it was better than all the other girls who worked there.

I wasn’t much older than they were and they were all very submissive to the super strict assistant manager.

The manager was on holiday the weekend I started working there. I was shown around and told my tasks. I listened attentively and said things like, “thank you,” “excellent, I’m taking note of that,” “perfect, I’m on it,” “got it,” “understood,” etc. Like any good employee on training.

The assistant manager left to go on break and when she came back, told me I had misplaced something and where it should go.

‘Oh, sorry about that, got it. I’ll remember to put it in the other corner next time.’

It wasn’t a big deal, and another chocolate place I worked at years later, we’d misplace things all the time and laugh about it and were all jovial with each other. So I know that misplacing something when I had not previously been told where it went is not a terrible faux pas, but the assistant manager still eyed me angrily and growled a response at me.

But that shift went fairly well.

I had noticed how the other girls acted towards the assistant manager, perhaps I should have been less assertive? Several of the girls would bend in supplication, “I’m so sorry, it’s my fault, I don’t deserve your kindness.” That is not normal behaviour, and I was in an abusive relationship and already very submissive to begin with and I saw that. So imagine!

On top of that, when I chatted with the other girls, they kept complimenting me, wishing to be like me, saying I was so confident, so pretty, so this, so that. So I’m guessing I disrupted the rule of Queen B. B is for bitch.
