Please join me and sign the petition against COPPA and the FTC!They want to regulate content instead of allowing parents to do their jobs and FINE (make us pay money) content creators if a kid watches our content. We cannot be responsible if a kid lies on YouTube when creating an account.
I just signed the petition against #COPPA for YouTube to save content creators. Here’s the link to the petition. I urge you to sign this petition if you believe in freespeech, Freedom of expression & creativefreedom. This will affect ALL users, creators AND viewers.
Petition: http://chng.it/H5V25V27yzLeave a Comment to the FTC: https://www.regulations.gov/comment?D=FTC-2019-0054-0001Remember to keep it civil.I also wrote a comment to the FTC. If you’re looking for inspiration, here’s what I wrote.
I would like to comment regarding the new COPPA rules for content creators on YouTube. I don’t believe it will protect children since predators knows how to bypass systems. As a step-parent I ensure that I know what my step kids are watching and limit their time to regulate their usage on YouTube. My husband and I, as well as their mother and her wife, teach them discernment. We can protect them better than any rules or regulations online can. Please, let us do our parenting jobs.
Now, as a content creator, my videos are not for children, don’t target children, and are not viewed by children, but this new rule would make ME responsible for someone LYING when they log in. I CANNOT be made accountable for or be responsible for the actions of another person. Every single person is responsible for their own actions. If someone who is 13 decides to lie when logging into YouTube and creating an account, that’s on them. I should not have to pay a fine for a LIAR to stumble upon my videos.
INSTEAD, I have a suggestion. I believe that by obliging people to show identification when creating an account can help ensure that someone who is too young to be on YouTube or to watch specific content will not do so. If everyone who watches YouTube MUST be logged in to watch ANY video, then that ensures that no one without an account can watch any videos. Then, when people create an account, it requires certain identification to be uploaded and verified. This way, a child cannot create an account without a parent’s consent and that child account will be deemed a child’s account, for which access will be limited. This would remove the responsibility from content creators and put it on those creating accounts.
I urge you to reconsider the new regulations. It will not solve the problem at hand. It will not protect children. It will not keep predators out. It will not prevent ambitious young teens to lie about their age.
I thank you for your time and attention in reading my request and proposal regarding this situation.
